D-Day! Now bring on Accrington Stanley

That's Deadline Day in the European football world.

There were many players going hither and thither on loan and permanently. Gravesen to Celtic is a great buy, as is Woodgate to Boro and Gallas to Arsenal. The story of the day had to be West Ham's signing of Tevez & Mascherano from Corinthians. One reason these transfers pleased me so much is that it got Ashley Cole's Chelsea move off the back pages.

How they got them over the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea baffles me. I suspect that one or more of the following are true:

They had a massive signing on fee, a golden hello if you like;
West Ham have mortgaged their souls to pay them (I doubt this is true though);
They want to be big fish in a small pond;
They have some kind of clause in their contracts that means they are free to be sold if they want, to any club, in a year's time;
The fact that they are a London team.

One thing is certain: someone somewhere made A LOT of money out of that deal. Everyone is saying that they'll only be at West Ham for a season, and that may well be true, but I love that they are at a club like West Ham. It raises the profile of the club, it gives Upton Park at least a year of entertainment from 2 class players. I really hope West Ham's draw in the Panda-Cola Cup (or whatever it's called these days) takes them to play someone like Accrington Stanley on a cold wet Tuesday night in February - the glamour of the Premiership eh?

Anyway I look forward to seeing them play this season, good luck West Ham, apart from when you play the 'pool.

Speaking of my team, Liverpool, we did alright over the summer. We spent quite a bit, got a few players who seem pretty good. (Is it pronounced Kite or Koyt?)

And Blackpool? They got Hull City striker Ben Burgess. They'll probably closely escape relegation again. That seems to be their only ambition these days.
